Sykes, a professor emeritus at Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory, was an influential contributor to the establishment and evolution of plate tectonic theory, who helped revolutionize our understanding of the deformation of the earth.

Mechanical engineer Siyuan Chen PhD’18 is on a quest for “the holy grail of geology”—the ability to reliably predict earthquakes and empower communities around the world to prepare for the onset of seismic activity.
“Placing guards around tree pits allows urban trees to absorb more storm water runoff, taking pressure off the city sewer system,” said the study’s senior author, Patricia Culligan, a professor at Columbia Engineering and a member of Columbia’s Earth Institute and Data Science Institute.
