Imagine if the deep sea oil rigs—like those responsible for the 2010 Gulf oil spill—were replaced with floating solar cells. Columbia scientists have now developed a prototype of such a device—dubbed a solar fuels rig—that uses sunlight and water to create fuel.

Columbia Engineering assistant professor Daniel Esposito and his team have created a floating device capable of producing hydrogen gas (H2) for fuel using sunlight and seawater, minus the CO2 emissions usually produced by this process.
